Student led conferences held on the 8th of March, 2017 created an opportunity for the students to reflect on their learning. Although this is an everyday experience in class, what makes this day special for the students is the fact that they get to do this with their parents. I heard some great conversations where the child took charge of the situation and answered the questions confidently. They shared their knowledge and understanding of concepts. It was very fulfilling to see the smiles, satisfaction, joy and pride on students as well as parents. Thank you to all for making this day so special!

As a culmination of the unit on Habits and Habitats, Second graders went on a field trip to Thetford Game Reserve to gain first hand experience about the Savannah, and make connections between classroom learning and the natural habitat. They identified different habitats within the reserve- Savannah, Mountains and freshwater. Upon their return, the students reflected on their day, and said: “ When there is open space, the animals run towards rocks and trees to be safe.” “I was happy to see lots of animals but I was glad there were no lions.” “9 rhinos have been poached in the past 11 years and our responsibility is to not harm animals.” “Animals live together as friends too. Egrets eat ticks of the buffalos.” “I was excited and scared at the same time, when we were on the truck.” “I had never seen so many animals- I saw a baboon for the first time.” “We saw tall grass and trees, so animals can graze and browse.” “There were trees, hills, and grass, so the animals have a lot of space to roam around.” Students have begun to realize that us humans have a responsibility toward the various habitats with which we interact. Second graders were dedicated themselves for the serving the community by doing two tasks. One, by reusing plastic bottles to make plant pots. These plant pots were for the HIS classrooms. These plants beautified the school environment. As our second activity, we collected old and new pencils, colours, markers, etc to donate to Kadyamadare School. The students sorted the stationary and designed labels for the pencil holders. Students selected one habitat of their interest. They used books, online resources, Grade 11 students, peers and adults to gather facts that was recorded in the form of notes on Notability (iPad). Next, they created posters that showed the details of their habitat and illustrated the living things that live in this habitat, the food web and the human impact on this habitat. Finally, they presented their posters to their peers. Service Saturday
Saturday 18 February 2017 Dear Elementary Parents On Saturday 18 February it is “Service Saturday” at HIS, which is a morning for the entire school dedicated to service for the community and/or the environment. The students will be at school from 8:00 until 12:00 on that day. The service learning is connected to the learning the students have done over the course of the year, with the emphasis on helping others or the environment. The day will begin with a walk around the big field in support of the charity, Kidzcan. We ask that you donate $1 per walker in aid of this worthy charity. Thank you. From 11:00 – 12:00 there will be concert in the PAC by Mabvuku Magic, which all students attending. There is no entrance fee but a $2 donation per student would be greatly appreciated by the Grade 12 student organizers. This will to go towards buying school shoes for the underprivileged children. The students’ schedule for the day is as follows: SERVICE SATURDAY 18TH FEBRUARY 2017 8:00 Students arrive. Hello, I’ve been in and out of Harare for the past two years, having moved here from Rome, Italy. With my husband who works for the UN, we have moved to nine different postings with our three children. I’ve taught Pre-K through 2nd at AISD (Dhaka), Jakarta International School, Cairo American College, International School of Yangon, and Ambrit International (Rome) and am delighted to be in 2nd Grade at this beautiful campus! I am from Nepal, but I was born in Rome, and went to school in Nepal, Italy and England. Having initially graduated in International Relations, I decided to go into teaching and have a M.Ed. and Teaching Certification from the College of New Jersey, US. Our children all graduated from International schools: one is an Undergraduate in Edinburgh, a Postgraduate at UCLA, and one who is working in England. I’m looking forward to a great year with your children, learning and discovering together. I love dancing, children and sport, especially gymnastics. I used to be in the national gymnastics team, then became one of the national coaches. I have a diploma in early childhood education and I am currently doing my bachelor in education with UNISA. I have been working here at H.I.S in grade 2 for nine years now and happy to be continuing. I am Nadine Mtamangira and I'm 29 years old. I have been working at H.I.S for the past 7 years. I was previously working in grade 3 and this is my first year in grade 2. I've been married for 2 years now with no children YET! My husband is a guitar teacher here at the school. I love children and I have a passion for all things culinary.
